THE USEFUL STARTING POINT

A heavy parcel needs suitable packaging, a realistic handover plan and service-specific eligibility checks.

Start with the packed weight

Weigh the final sealed parcel on scales with sufficient capacity. A dense item can be small but put substantial strain on the base, seams and internal support. Do not judge the necessary carton strength from volume alone.

Carrier and handover limits vary. A general network limit does not automatically mean a local shop, locker or collection arrangement accepts the same weight.

Plan the physical handover

Consider how the parcel will be moved to the collection point and whether it can be safely handled. Do not leave a heavy box where the driver or shop staff must negotiate an unsafe obstruction. Check the chosen service’s heavy-item preparation instructions before dispatch.

If a parcel is outside the product’s permitted range, investigate an appropriate specialist or freight option. Entering a lower weight to obtain a parcel label is not a workaround.

Support the contents and the box

Use a carton and closure suitable for the packed load. Immobilise the contents so a heavy object cannot punch through a panel. Protect sharp edges and avoid loose metal parts moving within the box.

Splitting an order may be practical only if the contents can be separated safely. Each new parcel needs its own measurements, contents record and correct label; do not divide a declared total weight between boxes without weighing them.

Keep the measurement and value evidence

UPS and other carriers publish specific dimensional and heavy-package rules. Check the selected product rather than treating a carrier name as a single limit. Photograph the sealed parcel and keep the weight reading and handover record.

Our tools can help organise dimensions and volume. They cannot confirm safe manual handling, product acceptance, price or compensation eligibility.

Questions worth clearing up

Can I split the total weight equally across two labels?

Only enter what each finished parcel actually weighs. Splitting an order creates new physical packages, each with its own contents, protection, dimensions and weight. An arithmetic division of the original total is not a substitute for weighing the new boxes.

What if I cannot move the parcel safely?

Do not assume a standard shop or collection service solves the handling problem. Check the provider’s preparation and handover requirements and consider appropriate specialist transport. A size calculator cannot assess safe manual handling or the strength of your carton.
