Understand outside dimensions, length and girth, and why a heavy box needs its own preparation plan.
Length and girth are different measurements
UPS’s UK dimensions guide tells senders to measure irregular items as if enclosed in a rectangular box. Use the extreme points. The longest dimension is the length; the other two dimensions determine girth.
For a rectangular box, length plus girth is L + 2W + 2H. A 70 × 40 × 30 cm parcel therefore measures 210 cm by this method, not 140 cm. A carrier’s eligibility limit still needs to be checked separately.

Use the outside dimensions of the sealed parcel. These results explain measurements; they do not confirm carrier eligibility or a shipping price.
Girth is twice the sum of the other two sides after identifying the longest side. Check the actual product’s rounding, restrictions and measurement method.
Actual and dimensional weight
UPS explains both actual weight and dimensional weight, including service rounding rules. Preserve your measured figures and then apply the chosen product’s rules; do not use a rounded-down figure simply because a booking field accepts it.
A compact heavy object and a large light object pose different problems. The first may need stronger packaging and safe handling, while the second may be billed for the space it occupies. Neither can be assessed reliably from the item’s own weight alone.
Plan the handover as well as the service
A drop-off point may have its own size and acceptance limits. Check the official location information before carrying a heavy parcel there. If arranging collection, ensure the parcel can be safely moved from the handover position and that the labels are attached.
When sending to an international address, prepare the required customs data and confirm whether the intended recipient is a residential, business or approved pickup address. Do not substitute a pickup-point address without selecting the corresponding service.
Keep a defensible parcel record
Record the dimensions, packed weight, contents, value and label reference together. Photograph any unusual packaging and keep the shipment confirmation. If an adjustment is raised, compare the carrier’s stated reason with the retained measurements before disputing it.

Questions worth clearing up
Why is length plus girth larger than the sum of three sides?
Girth measures around the cross-section: 2W + 2H. Length is then added once. For a 70 × 40 × 30 cm box, the result is 70 + 80 + 60 = 210 cm. Do not confuse that with a three-edge sum.
Can I use the object’s narrowest measurements?
UPS explains measuring irregular shapes as though enclosed in a rectangular box. Use the extreme points and outside packed dimensions. Ignoring a handle or projecting section can understate the space and eligibility checks.
Does a general network limit guarantee shop acceptance?
No. The handover location and product must also be checked. Plan safe transport to the location, check acceptance before travelling and keep the receipt. A broad network limit is not a universal local-shop limit.
