THE USEFUL STARTING POINT

Check service-specific parcel formats, packaging and international documents before handover.

A larger parcel needs a separate check

Royal Mail’s combined size guide distinguishes Parcelforce parcels from Royal Mail formats and lists a separate large-parcel product. Do not assume that because a parcel is too large for Royal Mail it is automatically accepted by every Parcelforce service.

Measure the final packed box, calculate length plus girth where requested, and check the specific product. The receiving branch or collection option must also support the parcel you intend to hand over.

Packaging is part of preparation

Parcelforce publishes packaging guidance because the outer box, internal protection and closure all affect safe handling. Use a sound carton, immobilise the contents and remove old labels. Reinforce a heavy parcel appropriately rather than relying on a fragile reused box.

A “fragile” note is useful information but does not replace cushioning or alter the chosen product’s exclusions. Keep photographs showing both the internal packing and the sealed parcel.

Keep domestic and overseas requirements separate

An overseas shipment can require different service checks, customs information and recipient details. The international measurement guidance asks senders to be accurate; domestic size assumptions are not a substitute for checking the international product.

When sending goods outside the UK, HMRC’s postal-export guidance is a useful starting point. Identify the contents specifically and use the documents requested by the postal or courier service, rather than guessing whether a form is needed.

Handover, tracking and evidence

Confirm where to drop off a parcel or how collection is arranged, then retain the receipt and reference. If a parcel stops progressing, use the official tracking/support route and keep the packaging and value evidence available.

This is independent editorial guidance, not a SelectaParcel offer of Parcelforce carriage, compensation or delivery performance. Current product conditions and destination rules must be checked before purchasing elsewhere.

Questions worth clearing up

Does “larger than Royal Mail” automatically mean Parcelforce acceptance?

No. Royal Mail’s combined guide distinguishes Parcelforce products and a separate large-parcel format. Check the particular product, handover option, packed measurements and contents. One carrier’s limit is not an automatic approval by another.

Can I rely on a fragile sticker instead of internal packing?

No. A sticker does not stop movement, strengthen a carton or alter compensation exclusions. Follow the packing guidance, protect vulnerable parts and keep evidence of the item and packaging before dispatch.

Should overseas parcels use the same preparation record as UK ones?

Keep the measurements and value evidence in both cases, but add the route-specific customs information required for overseas goods. Domestic acceptance and documentation assumptions should not simply be copied into an international booking.
