THE USEFUL STARTING POINT

A guide to shipment preparation, dimensional weight and the importance of account-specific restrictions.

Distinguish the DHL service

DHL is a group brand covering different services. This guide focuses on the DHL Express preparation material in the sources. Do not assume a DHL Express rule, account permission or handover option applies to every DHL-branded domestic service.

Before choosing a service, check origin, destination, contents, service availability and the point that will accept the parcel. A service name alone does not establish the final delivery commitment.

Allow for dimensional weight

DHL Express’s preparation guidance explains that large, light packages may be assessed by occupied space. Its centimetre example divides length × width × height by 5,000 for each piece. The carrier may remeasure and reweigh the shipment.

A 50 × 40 × 30 cm box has a 12 kg volumetric result at that divisor. If it weighs 4 kg, the larger result matters to this comparison. Rounding, minimums, extra handling and the actual product terms can still affect billing; our calculator does not produce a DHL rate.

NO ACCOUNT. NO COURIER CONNECTION.

Use the outside dimensions of the sealed parcel. These results explain measurements; they do not confirm carrier eligibility or a shipping price.

The default 5,000 divisor is an example, not a universal carrier rule. Change it to the value specified by your service. Check the actual product’s rounding, restrictions and measurement method.

Restricted does not mean generally accepted

The DHL Express UK prohibited-items page explicitly distinguishes customers without an account from account holders who may need prior approval for some restricted commodities. Never treat another customer’s approval as permission for your parcel.

The destination can introduce further restrictions. Check both the UK network rules and the import rules. Food, cosmetics, medicines and batteries deserve specific checks; a commercial invoice does not override a prohibition.

Prepare each piece and its documents

DHL’s preparation guide calls for a complete label or waybill on each package. Use suitable cushioning and prevent sharp contents from piercing the box. Make the item description and declared value consistent across electronic data and any supporting documents.

SelectaParcel provides preparation guidance only at this stage. It does not have an active DHL Express booking integration or approved account arrangement to offer here.

Questions worth clearing up

Does another sender’s DHL account approval cover my goods?

No. The UK Express restrictions page distinguishes general non-account acceptance from some account-specific approvals. Check your own shipment and account conditions with DHL. Another business’s permission does not establish that your item or destination is accepted.

Is the 5,000 divisor a universal DHL rule?

This page identifies the DHL Express preparation example using centimetres. Do not generalise it to every DHL group product, route or account. Confirm the actual service’s measurement, rounding and handling rules before making a cost assumption.

Can a correct invoice make a prohibited item acceptable?

No. Documentation and acceptance are different checks. A complete invoice cannot override a network or destination prohibition. Confirm contents acceptance first, then supply the required accurate shipment information.
