THE USEFUL STARTING POINT

Prepare an accurate address, a clear contents record and the right customs questions for Italy.

Build the Italian address from the recipient’s version

Begin with the full name, street or named-property details, five-digit CAP and town supplied by the recipient. Preserve apartment, building and province details where they are needed. A postcode-format check does not prove that a particular household or business can be found.

Ask about island destinations or access constraints when enquiring about a service. Do not infer mainland coverage or a delivery window from the word “Italy”. This page concerns goods leaving Great Britain; Northern Ireland movements need their own check.

Separate a sale, a present and a return

Write the reason for sending separately from the goods description. “Gift” explains an intention, not what the object is. A useful record might identify two cotton T-shirts, their quantity, value and origin; supporting documents should agree with that record.

A commercial sale must not be relabelled as a personal gift to seek different import treatment. For a returned purchase, keep the original purchase and return references and ask the provider which evidence is needed. The required forms depend on the selected service and procedure.

Check contents with the Italy route in mind

Use Royal Mail’s current Italy guide as a postal starting point and check the terms of whichever courier you actually choose. Food, cosmetics, medicines, plants and battery-powered products should trigger an explicit restrictions check before the parcel is sealed.

Acceptance and compensation are separate decisions. Even if the contents can travel under specified conditions, that does not mean damage to every item is covered. Do not treat another sender’s successful delivery as approval for your own contents.

Prepare the recipient for import questions

Current Commission guidance addresses changes to covered low-value distance-sale imports. It must not be reduced to a universal fee or tax-free threshold for every parcel. Ask the selected provider how the actual contents and purpose are treated and who will pay any applicable import or clearance charges.

Keep the recipient’s contact details accurate so the provider can request information through its legitimate process. A delivery estimate should allow for customs and recipient action; no guaranteed transit time is stated here.

Keep a small Italy dispatch file

Retain the complete destination, item list, value evidence, final measurements, declaration and handover receipt together. Share the tracking reference after physical handover, making clear that label creation alone does not prove dispatch.

Our UK-to-Italy preparation guide focuses on the packing workflow. This country page is the destination checklist. Neither creates a booking or determines the amount of customs charges.

Questions worth clearing up

Can I get a live delivery price here?

No. SelectaParcel is currently an information website; online rates and booking are coming soon.

Does sending a gift remove customs requirements?

No. The shipment purpose may affect treatment, but accurate goods descriptions and the required documents are still needed.
